Congratulations to Dr Julian Huppert, Director of the Intellectual Forum and University of Cambridge Lecturer in Physics, who has been elected a Fellow of the .

The Royal Society of New South Wales is based in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1821, it is the oldest learned society in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Fellowship category of membership to the Royal Society recognises individuals who are leaders in their fields within the disciplines of science, art, literature, and philosophy. Dr Huppert, a former MP for Cambridge, is being recognised for his substantial contributions to the study of unusual structures of DNA and to public policy.

He said: "It’s a great honour to be one of ten new members of the Royal Society of New South Wales. My family are Australian, and I have lived and studied in Sydney, as well as Cambridge. My first science research project was here (working on piperine, the active component of black pepper), and I even had the opportunity to represent Australia. I now hold a Visiting Professorship at the University of New South Wales, and it is wonderful to further strengthen my links here".
