Glaciology and Remote sensing of the polar regions

Frazer Christie is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, where he researches the key ice, ocean and atmosphere interactions driving contemporary glacier and ice-sheet change across the polar regions.

Academic interests

Frazer Christie’s academic interests include:

  • Satellite remote sensing and geophysics
  • Recent cryospheric change as observed over the satellite era (~1960-present)
  • Ice sheet-ocean-atmosphere interactions
  • Ice sheet mass balance.

Degrees obtained

  • MA, University of Aberdeen.
  • PhD, University of Edinburgh.

Awards and prizes

  • Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment & Society (SAGES) award for best publication in field of Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate sciences, 2017/2018.
  • Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment & Society (SAGES) award for best publication in field of Atmosphere, Ocean and Climate sciences, 2016/2017.
  • Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Silver Medal, 2014. Awarded to the highest achieving Honours Geography student in each of the Scottish Universities.

Biography

Frazer Christie is a glacial geophysicist with expertise in remote sensing. Specifically, his research aims to unravel the key ice, ocean and atmosphere interactions responsible for controlling the pronounced deterioration of the world’s ice sheets and glaciers since the beginning of the observational era (c. 1960). To do this, Frazer utilises a suite of cutting-edge satellite and airborne geophysical imaging techniques, ocean and atmosphere model outputs and data collected in the field (on ice or by boat). His is supported by . At Cambridge, in addition to supporting Part 1A teaching at °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û, he contributes to the MPhil in Polar Studies degree programme offered by the Scott Polar Research Institute, and lectures on topics pertaining to the remote sensing of the cryosphere.

Frazer gained his MA (First Class Hons) degree in Geography from University of Aberdeen in 2014 and, following a brief interlude in industry, later obtained the PhD degree in Atmospheric and Environmental Science from the University of Edinburgh in 2018.

Frazer is a Fellow of The Geological Society of London, has recently published research in a selection of world-leading journals including Science and Geophysical Research Letters, and frequently acts as a reviewer for these journals and more. His work has also recently been cited in several high-profile Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) publications including, most notably, the IPCC’s  (The Working Group I contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report).

In early 2019, he and fellow Jesuan Prof Julian Dowdeswell embarked on the international ‘Weddell Sea Expedition’ to study the glaciology, oceanography and marine geology of Larsen C Ice Shelf and its environs. More information about the expedition can be found .

Other interests

There are many reasons why I’m so happy to be a part of °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û. The three biggest reasons for me are the opportunities to be involved in College sport, the support the College provides for me with for my research and the help in making sure that we have comfortable, affordable accommodation when we have needed it. °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û is so friendly and so it is incredibly easy to get involved in the sport and social side of the College. The MCR does a great job in welcoming new...

°ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û has been a great home for me during my PhD. I chose °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û for a number of reasons – first, the location. We are central enough to be within easy walking distance of most things, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle (and tourists in summer!). The College also has extensive grounds, with amenities like the hockey pitch, football pitch and tennis courts all on site. Secondly, the accommodation is some of the best I’ve seen in Cambridge. My house was newly renovated when...

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

What first attracted me to °ÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û was its reputation and history, central location without being touristy, and the postgraduate housing options. When I arrived at Jesus I was so pleased to find the partner accommodation was spacious, affordable, and situated very close to the college, allowing us to really take advantage of the facilities. We especially enjoyed The Roost, the nicest of all the college bars, doubling as a café during the day - ideal for studying or meeting up with groups - and a lively pub in the...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose Jesus because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. Jesus also...
